Baseball Loses Slugfest to Portland, 22-11

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University baseball team lost a slugfest to the University of Portland Friday night by a score of 22-11 at Buck Shaw Stadium. The 33 runs and 35 hits between both teams added up to the longest game at "The Shaw" this season, 3:48.

The Pilots (15-19, 8-8 WCC) jumped out on top early knocking the Broncos (16-23, 7-8 WCC) starting pitcher, Chad Fillinger, from the game after only 1/3 of an inning. Fillinger allowed seven runs on five hits to take his fourth loss of the season.

Cory Lunde led the hitting barrage for Portland, going 5-for-5 with four runs score and one RBI. Brock Griffin went 2-for-5 in the game with two home runs, three runs scored and seven runs batted in. All in all, every Pilot starter had at least one hit including Matt Hollod and Kory Casto each had four hits in the win.

Santa Clara threw six total pitchers in the game with only Matt Krueger lasting longer than three innings. He allowed only two runs on three hits in 3 1/3 innings of relief. Thomas Van Buskirk looked impressive in only his second appearance on the year, throwing a scoreless ninth in which he struck out one batter.

Pat Peavey led the Broncos offense, going 2-for-5 with one run scored and five runs batted in. Four of his RBI came on one swing of the bat, as he deposited his third home run of the season over the left field fence in the third inning for a grand slam.

A.J. LaBarbera went 3-for-6 with three RBI and one run scored, while Jim Wallace continued his hot hitting, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI that came on his sixth home run of the season. Joey Gomes added his seventh home run of the season in his 1-for-5 performance at the plate.

The same two teams will continue their three-game series with game two Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. The series finale is scheduled for Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
