Santa Clara Falls to Gonzaga in Series Finale

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara University's baseball team played well for five innings, holding a 2-0 lead, but gave up five runs in the sixth, two in the eighth and 10 more in the ninth to fall to Gonzaga by a score of 17-2 Monday afternoon at Buck Shaw Stadium.

Despite walking six Bronco batters, Eric Clelland had a good outing for the Bulldogs, evening up his record on the season at 2-2 after allowing only two runs on eight hits.

Gonzaga (12-13, 3-3 WCC) had its bats come alive in the sixth inning, connecting for six singles that led to five Bulldog runs. Following that inning, the Zags did not look back, scoring 12 additional runs on 11 hits, including a ninth inning grand slam from Kevin Richardson followed by Nate Gold's 16th home run of the season in the very next at bat.

Joey Gomes, Ryan Chiarelli and Shawn Epidendio each collected two hits apiece for Santa Clara (12-15, 3-2 WCC) in the loss. John Redmond falls to 3-3 on the season after allowing all five runs in the sixth inning and 12 total hits in his 6 2/3 innings of work.

The Broncos will continue West Coast Conference action this week with a three-game set in Malibu, Calif., against Pepperdine. The Broncos and Waves will begin their series Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
