IRVINE, Calif. - The Santa Clara University baseball team earned a little redemption Saturday night, holding on to a narrow 3-2 victory over UC Irvine at Anteater Ballpark in Irvine, Calif.

One night after giving up two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to lose by a score of 2-1, the Broncos held on to their one run lead Saturday night, snapping their five-game losing streak.

Santa Clara (3-6) started the scoring in the first inning, getting two runs on only one hit. Ryan Chiarelli led off the inning by getting on when Jordan Szabo dropped a fly ball in left field. After an A.J. LaBarbera walk, Chiarelli scored on a Joey Gomes single to right field. After another walk and a fielder's choice, Gomes scored when Joe Diefenderfer walked with the bases loaded.

UC Irvine (8-4) answered right back in the bottom half of the first inning when Matt Anderson scored from third base on a single by Effren Trejo.

Both teams went quietly over the next two innings until Santa Clara catcher Jim Wallace unloaded to left field for his second home run of the season to give the Broncos a 3-1 lead.

The Anteaters narrowed the Bronco lead to one in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring once on three consecutive hits. Catcher Chris Miller doubled to left-center field to start the hit barrage, and was singled home by Jaime Martinez. But a fielder's choice and a fly ball to right field ended the UCI threat.

Sophomore John Redmond had his third consecutive quality start, throwing seven full innings in which he allowed only two runs on seven hits while striking out three.

Senior Grant Feichtmeir threw the final 1 1/3 innings of the game to pick up his second save of the season. He allowed only one hit while striking out three.

The same two teams will conclude their three-game series Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
