Box Score

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara University's baseball team looked like it was about to even up its record for the season with only three outs between them and victory Tuesday night at Buck Shaw Stadium. But it was California (4-4) that came away with the win, scoring five times on three Bronco errors in the ninth inning to get the 10-7 victory.

After a lead-off strike out, Santa Clara reliever Joe Diefenderfer gave up three straight singles, including Ben Conley's single to left field that scored Nick Medrano and David Nicholson when Ryan Chiarelli booted the ball then slipped to the ground to allow the two runs.

Santa Clara (3-5) could not rebound in the bottom half of the ninth as Jesse Ingram closed the ninth to pick up his first win of the season. Ingram allowed only three hits and struck out seven in 3 2/3 innings of work.

The Bears scored their 10 runs on 10 hits, including three from Nicholson who also knocked in two on the evening.

The Broncos belted out 11 hits, but the six errors cost them their chance to snap their losing streak, which is now at four games.

A.J. LaBarbera, Pat Peavey, Joey Gomes and David Mandley each had two hits on the evening, with Gomes scoring three times and Mandley knocking in two.

Santa Clara will now head out on the road for the first time in 2002, taking on UC Irvine for a three-game set in Southern California over the weekend. The Broncos and Anteaters will play at 7 p.m. Friday night, 6 p.m. Saturday night, and wrap-up the series with a 1 p.m. game Sunday.
