TORRANCE, Calif./LONG BEACH, Calif. — Zach Litoff recorded the second-fastest 3,000-meter Steeplechase mark in program history and Xander Olivero outraced all competition at 5,000 meters as part of a successful weekend for Santa Clara track & field. Litoff's 9:01.46 effort came for the Broncos as part of the Mt. SAC Relays at El Camino College and Olivero notched his 14:51.60 in the Beach Invitational at Long Beach State.
Litoff's time puts him just on the outside looking in for a spot in the NCAA West Regional Meet alongside Joey Berriatua. He ranks 54th and Berriatua ranks 52nd; the top 48 runners earn automatic qualification to the postseason.
"We had several great performances over the weekend, led by Zach Litoff's Steeple," head coach Felipe Montoro said. "To nearly break the nine-minute mark in his second attempt at the distance certainly bodes well for his future in the event. Xander Olivero also impressed with a strong final 300 meters for a new PR at 5,000 meters.
"Jack Davidson also performed well in the 1,500. Greer Chrisman continues to run well and both Ellie Kopf and Emma McCurry ran great races at 5,000 meters. We can't wait for the opportunity to build on these performances next week."
