Santa Clara University's student-athletes recorded a 3.04 grade point average (GPA) for the Fall 2011 quarter, topping 3.0 or better for the 14th time in 15 quarters. In addition 70 student-athletes achieved a 3.5 GPA or higher this quarter and 79 Bronco student-athletes have a 3.5 or higher cumulative GPA. Santa Clara's cumulative GPA for its student-athletes is 3.022.
"I'd like to once again congratulate all of our student-athletes and coaches for continuing this great culture of academic success, and of course, Zoe Kranzler and Jason Stock of our academic services unit, the "architects" of that culture. And I would especially like to single out Felipe Montoro and our two cross-country programs for their remarkable success. His teams are as competitive in the classroom as they are on the course," said Santa Clara Athletic Director Dan Coonan.
The women's cross country team led all Bronco teams for the fourth straight quarter with a 3.56 GPA during the Fall 2011 quarter. They also have the top cumulative GPA at 3.4 as well. Women's tennis posted the second-highest GPA at 3.36 in the Fall 2011 quarter.
On the men's side, the cross country team also posted the highest GPA at 3.55 for the Fall 2011 quarter for the third straight quarter. They also had the highest cumulative GPA at 3.29.
"I am once again very proud of our athlete's efforts in the classroom. Particularly those athletes that earned a perfect 4.0 last quarter: Nhunguyen Le, Matt Savage, Kevin Oliver, Sean Roe for the men and Kayla Germany and Emily Robinson for the women. Academic success is a requirement for our student-athletes and we make it a priority every quarter. Their dedication to balancing academics and athletics is one of the reasons I enjoy working with our student-athletes so much," said Bronco head cross country and track coach Felipe Montoro.
Individually, Santa Clara had eight student-athletes achieve a perfect 4.0 GPA for the Fall 2011 quarter and 27 student-athletes posted a 3.8 GPA or higher. There are 79 Bronco student-athletes with a 3.5 or higher cumulative grade point average as well.
Twelve Bronco programs posted a 3.0 GPA or higher for the Fall 2011 quarter, with seven teams posting a 3.3 GPA or higher for the Fall 2011 quarter. In addition, 12 teams have a 3.0 gpa or better for their cumulative GPA - with all but two women's sports posting a cumulative gpa of 3.0 or better.
Those 15 teams who posted a 3.0 or better GPA for the Fall 2011 quarter include: men's water polo, men's rowing, softball, volleyball, women's rowing, women's water polo, men's tennis, women's tennis, men's cross country, women's cross country, women's tennis, men's track and women's track.
In addition, 11 Fall sports athletes were named to the All-WCC Academic Team. Tanya Schmidt posted the highest GPA of the 12-member All-WCC Academic Team for volleyball with three other volleyball players being named Honorable Mention: juniors Kayla Lommori, Alexandra Palmer and Kaleigh Durket. Bronco men's soccer seniors Eric Masch and Kevin Klasila were honored among the league's top student-athletes on the men's side and Margueritte Aozasa and Bianca Henninger were named to the All-WCC Academic Team in women's soccer with teammates Olivia Klei, Cali Reis and Ellie Rice named Honorable Mention.
