Service Named Women's Cross Country Coach

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara University has named Tom Service, a successful high school coach at Leland High School and a Modesto, Calif. native, as its Head Women's Cross Country Coach, Director of Athletics Cheryl L. Levick announced today. Service will begin his duties on August 15.

"Tom Service will be a wonderful addition to our talented coaching staff," said Levick. "He has a keen understanding of what it takes to direct a high-level distance program and has numerous ties to Bay Area high schools. I believe our student-athletes will benefit from his direction and we look forward to continuing to move our women's cross country program forward."

Service, a 1972 graduate of San Jose State University with a bachelor's degree in social science, currently serves as the varsity men's and women's cross country coach at Leland High School in San Jose, Calif. He has led Leland squads to 14 league and five sectional cross country championships since 1988. Service coached seven male and female Central Coast Section (CCS) individual champions from with each performer continuing their careers in college.

"I am looking forward to the opportunity to lead the women's cross country program at Santa Clara University," said Service. "I plan to run a program that works hard both athletically and academically. I believe we have an excellent chance to be successful and I expect to build a championship caliber cross country program at Santa Clara University."
