SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Jerry Smith, the longtime successful Santa Clara women's soccer coach, was honored Saturday as the 2017 Bronco Legend at the school's annual Pasta Feed.

The event, held at Malley Center prior to the men's basketball game against San Diego, featured not only dinner, but also face painting and performances by the spirit squads before recognizing Smith.

Bronco Legends are alumni (individuals or teams) who contributed significantly to Santa Clara Athletics during their time at the school.

Smith has been the head coach of the women's soccer team at Santa Clara for 30 years. Although he is most known for the development of his players and teams, Smith also produces success and is the winningest women's soccer coach in Santa Clara history, having compiled a record of 424-132-52 (.740) -- ranked top-5 in NCAA Division I history -- establishing a standard of excellence few can match. Since taking over the head coaching duties at Santa Clara in the spring of 1987, Smith has built the Bronco soccer program into a national power. Overall, the Broncos have been to the NCAA Tournament 26 times, the College Cup 10 times, and won the 2001 national championship. In 2016, the team advanced to the national quarterfinals.
