Santa Clara Soars Over Sonoma State
March 17, 2007 The Santa Clara women's water polo team secured another win at home this afternoon against Sonoma State, making it the second time they've defeated Sonoma State this season. This is the first of Santa Clara's two games this afternoon at Malley Pool. The Broncos played a sound game both offensively and defensively to defeat the Seawolves 14-4. The Broncos came out strong offensively immediately in the first quarter, collecting goals from Katie Radvanyi, Andrea Evans, and a breakaway goal by Elizabeth Perry. The second quarter saw three more goals from Bronco players Kendra Betke, Jenny Knutson, and Evans, who was given the opportunity after a steal by Allie Lamb, bringing the half to a close with a score of 6-2. Santa Clara carried their offensive strength into the second half with goals from Radvanyi and Allie Lamb. As the shot clock ran down, Megan Zimmerman buried a left-handed goal into the back of the net. This momentum, once again, transferred into the fourth quarter. Kellie Dunn and Claire Linney each scored two goals, and Amy Lamb and Jenny Knutson each added one more, for a final score of 14-4. Not only were the Broncos outstanding on offense, but they also dominated on defense, as evident in their ability to hold Sonoma State to only four goals. As a team, the Broncos collected 16 steals, four of which were from Brianna Anderson. Once again, Randahl Capurro was strong in the cage, making eight steals for the Broncos and surrendering only two goals. The Broncos will play their second game of the afternoon against Cal State Monterey Bay at 3:00 p.m. at Malley pool.
