April 29, 2005

DAVIS, Calif. - The fourth-seeded Santa Clara women's water polo team posted a 13-6 victory over Cal State San Bernardino in the first day of the Western Water Polo Association Championships in Davis, Calif. With the win, the Broncos advance to the tournament semifinals to face top-seeded Loyola Marymount on Saturday. SCU is now 18-15 on the season.

"Today was an all-around, team effort," said head coach Keith Wilbur. "On the offensive side, Alanna Simpkins had her best match of the season. She really sparked our offense in the third quarter when we outscored them 6-2. On the defensive side, Elizabeth Perry played well in two-meter defense with three steals."

The match was close early on as the teams traded goals in the first period and were tied up at 3-3 after seven minutes of action. In the second period, SCU took a 5-3 lead behind goals from Catherine Flynn and Katie Radvanyi.

The Broncos pulled away from the Coyotes in the third period, outscoring CSUSB 6-2 in the quarter. Flynn, Simpkins and Lindsey Bacolini each scored twice in the period. In the fourth, SCU scored two goals to hold onto the win and advance in the winner's bracket.

Flynn paced SCU with four goals in the match. Bacolini added a hat trick, while Simpkins scored two goals. Andrea Evans, Kathleen Hamm, Bryn Asher and Radvanyi also found the back of the net for the Broncos.

Simpkins shined in the driver position through out the match. She tallied an assist and drew four kick-outs to go along with her two scores.
