BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's water polo team fell to host Cal State Bakersfield in the opening game of the 2003 Western Women's Water Polo Association Championships at the Hillman Aquatic Center. It took four overtimes, but the final score was 8-7 in favor of the Roadrunners.

Santa Clara, seeded fifth in this weekend's tournament, falls to 15-20 on the season. The Broncos will play at 10 a.m. on Saturday, against eighth seed Chapman. The Roadrunners improve to 16-20. It marked the third time this season that the Broncos have lost to CS Bakersfield in overtime.

"It was a really good game, I can't complain," SCU head coach Keith Wilbur said. "We just have a tough time beating this team. It goes down to the wire every time."

Should the Broncos win the 10 a.m. match on Saturday, they will play CS Hayward later that afternoon at 3 p.m.

Kelley Mays and Katy Shumm led the Broncos with two goals each, while Allan Simpkins, Kathleen Hamm and Elizabeth Glotzbach tallied one score apiece. Anne Ginotti led the defense with nine saves and two steals.

The Broncos started fast, and took a 4-2 lead at halftime, and took a 6-5 lead heading into the final minute of the fourth quarter. CS Bakersfield tied it up by the end of regulation and took a 7-6 lead in the second overtime. Santa Clara countered to take the match into two sudden-death periods.

On Sunday, the seventh-place match will take place at 10 a.m., while the contest for fifth place will begin at 11:15 a.m. The third place team will be decided during a 12:30 p.m. match, and the title game will begin at 2 p.m.
