Santa Clara Water Polo Goes 0-2 on the Weekend

April 13, 2008

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's water polo team (16-11) faced a difficult road trip this weekend as they played two top-ten opponents in their pools. The Broncos fell to No. 10 UC Davis 8-3 on Saturday and 10-7 to No. 9 San Jose State on Sunday.

In the game against Davis, Allie Lamb, Rochelle Stowe, and Christie Miller each scored a goal, Elizabeth Perry had two steals and a kickout, and Randahl Capurro had seven blocks with a steal and an assist in the cage.

"We just had a hard time getting our offense going in the game," said head coach Keith Wilbur. "They played aggressively on both ends and we had trouble stopping their counterattack."

In the game against the Spartans, Meg Zimmerman notched her first hat trick of the year along with a kickout. Amy Lamb had a goal, two assists, and a steal. Jenny Knutson had a goal, an assist, two steals, and a kickout. Kendra Betke scored once and Perry had three steals to go with her goal. Capurro had ten blocks in goal.

"We played much better than Saturday," said Wilbur. "We actually played much better defense than the score showed, we just had one breakdown in the last part of the third quarter when we actually had the scored tied at 3-3. We did a good job offensively, we just need to figure out how not to have a breakdown if we want to compete with teams in the top ten or fifteen."

The Broncos play one more game at UC Santa Cruz next Saturday, April 19 before the WWPA Championships the week after.
