Water Polo Tops Cal Poly 8-1

April 10, 2004

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's water polo team earned an 8-1 victory over Cal Poly this afternoon in San Luis Obispo. The Mustangs are the top-ranked collegiate club team in the country, according to the Collegiate Water Polo Association. The Broncos are now 17-15 with the win.

"It was a very physical game," head coach Keith Wilbur said post-match. "We built our lead slowly through each quarter, getting a couple of goals here and there, and the team did well in all phases of the game."

Santa Clara led 2-0 at the end of the first quarter, and 4-0 by intermission. The Broncos took a 5-1 lead after three frames en route to the victory.

Katy Shumm, Kellie Dunn, Kathleen Hamm and Katie Radvanyi scored one goal each for the Broncos' other tallies. Kristin Barnes guarded the cage for SCU, netting 12 blocks.

The Broncos return to the pool next Saturday, visiting Cal State Hayward for a noon match. Santa Clara will return home to host its annual alumni contest, which will be at noon at the Leavey Pool. The Broncos conclude their season April 23-25 at the WWWPA Championships in Los Angeles.
