Late Goal Sinks Broncos 8-7 Against CS Bakersfield

April 1, 2007

DAVIS, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's water polo team took on Cal State Bakersfield Sunday morning at the Aggie Shootout. Three goals and an assist from Brianna Anderson were not enough however, as the Roadrunners scored the game winner in the final minute of the game to seal an 8-7 victory.

It was a very competitive game. The Broncos struck first thanks to a goal by junior Liz Perry, but the lead didn't last long. Just 22 seconds later Bakersfield tied the game.

As the game progressed, the Broncos largest lead was 3-1 with two and a half minutes remaining in the first quarter. But Bakersfield responded with goals of their own, coming all the way back to take a 4-3 lead before the teams went to halftime tied 5-5.

In the second half the Broncos kept the pressure on, trading goals all the way up to 7-7. Then with 52 seconds in the fourth quarter, Bakersfield scored the game-winner off a rebound. Santa Clara was unable to respond and the game ended 8-7.

For the game, the Broncos were led offensively by Anderson, who scored three goals, notched an assist and had one steal. Santa Clara also received goals from Katie Randvanyi, Andrea Evans, Claire Linney and Perry. Amy Lamb also added two assists. Defensively, Randahl Capurro manned the cage and had nine blocks and a steal.

Sunday's loss makes Bakersfield only the second WWPA team to defeat Santa Clara this year, who's record now stands at 16-11 overall, 11-3 in the WWPA. The Broncos will wrap up the Aggie Shootout against Colorado State this afternoon.
