Water Polo Tops CS San Bernardino 9-7

March 21, 2004

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's water polo team defeated Cal State San Bernardino 9-7 to close out participation at the Claremont Colleges Tournament at the CMC Aquatics Center. The Broncos fell to eighth-ranked Michigan 8-3 earlier in the day and remain with an even overall record at 13-13.

The victory against the Coyotes was key for the Broncos regarding conference standings. Catherine Flynn netted five of the Broncos' nine goals, while Anne Ginotti stepped up the defensive efforts and notched 16 saves.

"We came out really well and were up 4-0 by half," SCU head coach Keith Wilbur said. "It was a more even second half, and Catherine really stepped up her game and made some key goals outside two meters that kept us with a comfortable lead. Anne was making blocks all game long. It was a good victory for our program."

Alanna Simpkins, Katy Shumm, Kathleen Hamm and Katie Radvanyi scored one goal each to close out scoring in that contest.

Against Michigan earlier in the day, Simpkins, Kellie Dunn and Radvanyi scored one goal each, while Kristin Barnes netted five blocks and two steals while guarding the cage.

"I thought we gave a good, all-around effort," Wilbur said after the contest against the Wolverines. "They're a top-10 team and I thought we gave them a good game. They exposed a lot of the little things we still need to improve on."

The Broncos remain in Southern California for Spring Break and visit Cal State Northridge on Monday at 4 p.m. and Division III top-ranked Pomona-Pitzer, on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
