DAVIS, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's water polo team defeated Division III, fifth-ranked UC Santa Cruz 8-7 to open play at the UC Davis Shootout this afternoon. The Broncos followed with a 21-4 loss to host and 11th-ranked UC Davis later in the afternoon.

The split moved the Broncos to 11-7 on the season. The team continues action at the UC Davis Shootout tomorrow with a 7:30 a.m. contest against Purdue, followed by an afternoon match with Cal Baptist. Santa Clara returns home on Tuesday, March 12, to host Wagner at the Leavey Pool.

Becky Hong scored four goals to lead the Broncos against the Slugs, while Elizabeth Glotzbach added two. Katy Shumm posted the Broncos' first score while Kelley Mays added the game-winner with nine seconds remaining in the contest. Anne Ginotti posted six blocks in the cage.

Against the Aggies, Santa Clara found itself down 6-1 at the end of the first quarter, and 14-1 at the half. Hong, Mays, Carly Carpenter and Sara Schmitt each scored one goal for the Broncos. Ginotti recorded eight saves.
