Santa Clara Sweeps Slugfest

March 3, 2008

Santa Cruz -- The Santa Clara women's water polo team dominated their last two games at Slugfest, beating Whittier 14-5 and Colorado Sate 10-3, to sweep the tournament, going 4-0 on the weekend.

The Broncos spread the wealth in the first game of the day where nine different players scored. Amy Lamb's hot hand continued as she scored four goals for the second time in the weekend, adding an assist and a steal as well. Jenny Knutson and Claire Linney both had two goals, with Linney adding two assists as well. Allie Lamb, Rochelle Stowe, Maria Jarrell, Emily Bonk, Elizabeth Perry, and Claire Miller did the rest of the scoring for Santa Clara with one goal apiece.

Randahl Capurro and Wren White split time in goal, with Capurro blocking six shots in the first half and White blocking two in the second half.

In the second game against Colorado State, it was Allie's turn to shine, scoring a game high three goals along with a steal. Amy chipped in with a goal and two assitsts. Perry and Miller both scored twice for the Broncos and Knutson and Taylor Harkins both scored once.

Capurro played the first three quarters in the cage, blocking 13 shots. White blocked four in one quarter of play.

Kendra Betke and Perry both deserved a lot of credit for the Broncos defense. The team's primary two-meter defenders helped Santa Clara allow just 15 goals in four games this weekend.
