2012 Roadrunner Invitational III - Tournament Central
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Santa Clara University's women's water polo team led by two goals in the third quarter, but weekend host and league-rival CSU Bakersfield rallied for a late win, scoring four answered goals to top SCU 13-10 at the 2012 Roadrunner Invitational on Saturday.
Playing well, but unable to build off Thursday's Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) win at Sonoma State, Santa Clara went 0-2 on the day, after dropping a 14-6 decision to No. 7 LMU.
"Our six-on-five percentages were really good, actually the best its been all year," said Santa Clara head coach Keith Wilbur about his team's play against CSUB. "It's funny, we just didn't draw enough. We did a great job converting but the difference was Bakersfield was able to draw twice as many, twelve to six."
"I thought our girls played really hard," added Wilbur. "Bakersfield is one of the top teams in the league and playing at their place, it was one of our better games of the year."
In the opener, LMU used their speed to capitalize on a number of counter attack opportunities to build a 9-2 lead by halftime. Sarah Safir and Jamie Swartz played excellent defense in both games and Claire Eadington scored three times against CSUB.
Santa Clara plays nationally-ranked No. 19 Hartwick Sunday morning, then faces another WWPA test in San Bernadino in the afternoon.
