Broncos Earn Another WWPA Victory, Topping Cal St. Monterey Bay

SANTA CLARA, Calif.- Entering the fourth quarter tied at four apiece, the Santa Clara women's water polo team put a five spot on the board in the forth quarter while holding Cal St. Monterey Bay scoreless to win 10-5 at the Sullivan Aquatic Center Saturday morning.
With the win, the Broncos avenge a 10-4 loss to the Otters earlier this season and improve their WWPA record to 3-4. In the afternoon game, the Broncos came from behind to tie the game at eight in the fourth quarter, but ultimately fell 9-8 to the Lancers.
Kaitlin Murphy, Marina Allen and Claire Eadington paced the Broncos with two goals each. Sarah Safir's goal at 7:30 in the fourth quarter to give the Broncos a 6-5 lead proved to be the game winner. Eadington found the back of then net on the next trip down the pool before Laura Espinosa's counter goal gave the Broncos a three goal lead with five to play.
Santa Clara played some of their best defensive water polo this season in the second half against Cal St. Monterey Bay. Stephanie Clements did not allow a goal between the pipes during the third and fourth quarter and finished the game with five saves.
In the afternoon game, the Broncos found themselves trailing 6-4 at the half. Kovacs scored out of set, and the Lancers pushed their lead to three. Eadington earned an five meter on the counter attack and converted the penelty shot. Cal Baptist added a five meter goal before Murphy scored an impressive back-hand out of two meters.
Ashleigh Bandimere scored from the one spot on a six on five opportunity at 7:16 to cut the Lancers lead to one. On the Bronco next possession, Safir cashed in a nearside bar-in to tie the game at eight. Birch drilled a outside shot with two minutes remaining on a six-on-five opportunity for the game-winner.
