Jenny Anderson's Overtime Goal Lifts Broncos at SJSU Spartan Invitational

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Playing in its first tournament of the 2012 season, the Santa Clara Bronco women’s water polo team picked up an exhibition win over Canada’s Fraser Valley, 12-11, before dropping a 16-6 decision to No. 2 Cal Saturday at the SJSU Spartan Invitational.

In the 8 a.m. opener with Fraser Valley, Marina Allen scored four goals to pace Santa Clara’s offense. In a game that featured a number of ties and lead changes, it came down sudden-death overtime and a decisive goal from SCU sophomore Jenny Anderson (pictured) on a counter-attack following Fraser Valley’s opening possession.

“I know the first game was an exhibition, but it was an important game for us,” said Santa Clara head coach Keith Wilbur. “Fraser Valley is good competition and it was a really close game. It was good to be able to come through in a key situation.”

The Broncos matched up with the 2nd-ranked Cal Bears at 11:45 a.m. Junior goalkeeper Stephanie Clements had seven saves for the game and kept the score at 4-1 through the opening period.

“Stephanie (Clements) had a good game for us, she played well,” said Wilbur. “Against a team like Cal we try to focus in on defense and the team played well, with Stephanie coming up with some big blocks for us. Laura (Espinosa) was a big presence at two-meters and to do it against the No. 2 team in the country was impressive.”

True freshman Ashleigh Bandimere scored a pair of goals against Cal. SCU (0-2) will look for its first official win Sunday at SJSU when they face No. 16 UC Davis at 10:30 a.m., then the University of the Pacific at 2:15 p.m.

“The goal this weekend is to play better each game,” says Wilbur. “The team has done that thus far and we are looking forward to a couple of good games tomorrow.”
