Taylor Harkins Leads SCU Water Polo to Victory in Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – In front of her family and friends in Los Angeles, Newport Beach native Taylor Harkins scored five goals and had five steals to lead Santa Clara past Cal State San Bernardino, 8-4, in Western Water Polo Association play Saturday morning on the campus of Loyola Marymount University.

Harkins, a senior co-captain for the Broncos and 2007 graduate of Carona del Mar High School, scored three of her five goals in the first half. Santa Clara (10-13; 7-4 WWPA) built up a 7-2 lead through three periods.

"Taylor had a great game this morning," said Santa Clara head coach Keith Wilbur. "The whole team played really well. We played shutdown defense the entire way and that set the tone for us. Our two-meter players did a good job in front of the cage and that eventually gave Taylor some good looks from the outside. Her shot was going, it was great to see that."

Laura Burtness, Claire Eadington and Caitlin Espe also scored during the morning session. Senior goalkeeper Wren White had eight saves.

Both SCU and Cal State San Bernardino (8-22; 1-6 WWPA) also played sixth-ranked LMU (19-5; 7-0 WWPA) Saturday. The league-leading Lions won both games, beating CSUSB 13-5 and Santa Clara 11-6.

"It was a pretty physical game," said Wilbur about matching up with LMU in the afternoon. "I think we gave up too many six-on-five goals in the first half and it was too big of a hole to come out of. Hopefully we will get a chance to see LMU again at the conference championships."

Santa Clara will host The Bronco tournament next weekend, April 8-10, at the Sullivan Aquatic Center.
