Broncos Lose Close One to Harvard

By, John Nash '13

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's water polo team lost a heart breaker to Harvard 8-7 at the Sullivan Aquatic Center Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Broncos fall to 8-12 on the season. The Broncos will return to action on Thursday, March 24 at Sonoma St.

"We had too many lapses in terms of what we were doing on offense and defense," said Santa Clara head coach Keith Wilbur. "As soon as we weren't playing to our full potential, Harvard jumped all over us. Give them credit, they played a great game. We just need to have a more consistent effort and execute better throughout all four quarters.

Jenny Anderson led Santa Clara with two goals, while five other Broncos found the back of the net. Caitlin Espe finished with three steals, while Claire Eadington registered three assists and three steals. Wren White finished with 11 saves in the cage.

Laura Espinosa opened up the scoring by converting out of two meters.  However, Harvard responded with quick goals from Monica Zdrojewski and Devan Kennifer to put them up at 2-1 at 3:53.  The teams would go scoreless for the next eight minutes, when Marina Allen scored a lob shot to even the score.  Laura Burtness put the Broncos back on top with a goal out of set. Anderson pushed the lead to two on a nifty shot from two meters.

The Broncos struck first in the third quarter, as Eadington scored from the outside on a six-on-five. Harvard came back with three goals of their own to tie the score at five, as Shayna Price scored twice and Kennifer found the back of the net once.  Harvard's Shannon Purcell put the Crimson up one at 6:06 in the fourth and Aisha Price scored an outside shot to push the lead to two.

Espe ended Harvard's run by scoring out of two meters, and Anderson finished a counter-attack goal to tie the game at seven. Zdrojewski scored the final goal to put the Crimson up for good with 17 seconds left, lifting Harvard to the win.
