Broncos Collect Conference Win

By, John Nash '13

The Santa Clara women's water polo team opened up day one of the Rodeo Tournament with a 9-6 victory over Sonoma St at the Sullivan Aquatic Center. With the win the Broncos improve to 5-8 overall, 4-2 in WWPA play. Sonoma St. falls to 3-13, 0-5 in conference play.

It was the second win for the Broncos over Sonoma St. in the last two weeks. Santa Clara defeated the Seawolves 7-5 at the Triton Invitational on Feb 13.
Laura Espinosa led the Broncos with three goals and an ejection earned, while Taylor Harkins found the back of the net twice. Wren White was solid in the cage, making ten 10 saves on the afternoon.

"Marina Allen had a great game with three assists and two ejections earned" said head coach Keith Wilbur. "Last time we played them we had a tough time on our six on fives, but this time we did a much better job of converting our six on five opportunities. Laura had a great fourth quarter scoring a couple goals out of set and drawing an ejection. It really helps when you can get that kind of production out of two meters."

Sonoma St. opened the scoring on a counter-attack goal by Jessica Stransfield. Santa Clara would answer as Harkins scored on a six on five, and Caitlin Espe converted from the outside to give the Broncos a 2-1 lead.  The two teams swapped goals as Laura Burtness converted on an outside shot  to give Santa Clara a 3-2 advantage at 1:54 in the second.
Marin Allen's lob on the counter-attack put the Broncos up two at 5:34 in the third quarter.  The team's would trade goals as Jamie Swartz scored from the post to push the Broncos lead back to two.  Stansfield converted her second goal of the game with just 11 seconds left in the third to make it 5-4 Santa Clara.
It would be all Santa Clara in the fourth quarter, as Espinosa took over scoring three goals and earning an ejection as the Broncos pulled away from the Seawolves.
