SCU Women's Water Polo Improves to 3-1 in League Play
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Santa Clara University's women's water polo team won twice Sunday at the 2011 UC San Diego Triton Invitational, picking up conference wins over Sonoma State, 7-5, and Cal State Bakersfield, 13-7.
The Broncos had a hard time scoring in the opening game with Sonoma State and trailed 4-1 at the half. Four unanswered goals, sparked by a score from Laura Espinosa, then Claire Eadington and Marina Allen followed with goals and the Broncos were able to get the needed stops defensively to win.
"Wren White, our goalie, made some big saves for us throughout that whole game," said SCU head coach Keith Wilbur. "She kept us in it when we were not able to score in the first half."
In the second game against Cal State Bakersfield, SCU jumped out to a 7-2 lead and won going away. Marina Allen's four goals against Bakersfield was a career high.
"That was our best game of the year so far," said Wilbur about his team's effort in the tournament finale. "I was real happy with the progress we made this weekend. Coming from behind to win against Sonoma and then every phase of the game was well done against Bakersfield."
The Broncos are now 3-1 in Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) play and are back in action next weekend. The team's home-opener is Saturday, Feb. 19 at 4 p.m. against Cal Baptist.
