SCU Women’s Water Polo Initiates Preseason Training

2011 Season Preview

SANTA CLARA, Calif. –
The Santa Clara University women's water polo team has opened up spring practice in preparation for its 2011 season opener Saturday, January 29 at San Jose State's Spartan Invite.

Led by senior captain's Wren White and Taylor Harkins (pictured), the Broncos are practicing six days a week in the pool in conjunction with their strength and conditioning program.

"Our main focus right now is conditioning," says ninth-year head coach Keith Wilbur. "Most of the girls did a good job of working out over the (holiday) break but we obviously need to take it to another level before our first game."

The field and schedule for the Spartan Invite was recently released. The first chance to watch the Broncos in action will be the weekend of Saturday, Jan. 29-30 at SJSU.

Santa Clara @ SJSU Spartan Invite:
Saturday, Jan. 29  - vs. San Jose State (8:30 a.m.)
Saturday, Jan. 29 – vs. Pacific (4 p.m.)
Sunday, Jan. 30 – vs. Cal (10 a.m.)
Sunday, Jan. 30 – vs. UC Davis (4 p.m.)

"I'm really excited about the freshmen class," said Wilbur about the team's first few practices of 2011. "I think this team is one of the most athletic teams we've had. We may not have the experience we've had in the past but we have good athletes that are working hard."

The 2011 team has realistic aspirations of finishing among the top teams in the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA). The 2011 national preseason polls will be released on Jan. 12.
