March 5, 2010

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -

The Santa Clara women’s water polo suffered a 10-5 defeat this evening at the hands of UC San Diego on the road. The Broncos got three goals from Rochelle Stowe and fell to 7-8 overall on the season with the loss.

The Tritons struck first, scoring with 4:23 left in the quarter. The next time down the pool junior Caitlin Espe hit the post, but Santa Clara was able to equalize on Safir’s shot-clock buzzer-beater at 3:04. UCSD then took a 3-1 lead late in the first quarter but committed a foul that awarded a five-meter penalty shot to the Broncos, which senior Jenny Knutson stepped up and converted with 12 seconds to play to make it 3-2.

The Broncos were outscored 3-1 in the second quarter, and their only goal came from Stowe at 3:46 who buried a line drive shot from the right.

After the half, the Tritons added two more goals to the total to make it 8-3.

In the fourth, Stowe halved the UCSD lead with a 6-on-5 goal with 7:07 to play, but the Tritons scored two more within the next minute in a half to deflate the Santa Clara side. Stowe scored one more goal on a long shot from center with 2:58 to play, but the effort became too little, too late.

The Broncos have two more games on this weekend road trip, heading to Orange, Calif. to take on Cal State San Bernardino and Chapman tomorrow.
