BERKELEY, Calif. - The No. 19 Santa Clara women’s water polo team earned it’s first victory of the season in convincing fashion, dispatching Sonoma State, 8-1, this morning but fell 13-10 to Cal State East Bay in its final match of the Nor-Cal Cup at UC Berkeley.
The Broncos took a 3-0 lead and made it 5-1 by the end of the half against the Seawolves. In the second half, Santa Clara scored three unanswered goals in the third quarter, which would be it for scoring in the match.
The Broncos were paced by junior transfer Caitlin Espe, who converted three attempts. Senior Jenny Knutson also pitched in multiple goals, scoring two, while sophomore Marina Allen, junior Jade Look and senior Meg Zimmerman also found the back of the cage. Junior goalie Wren White had nine blocks.
In the afternoon match, Santa Clara led Cal State East Bay 9-8 heading into the final quarter, but conceded five goals along with the match in the final eight minutes. Junior Taylor Harkins scored three goals, while Marina Allen and Knutson each had two. Zimmerman and Look also scored, both their second goals of the day, and sophomore Sarah Safir also recorded a goal. White had 7 saves in the cage.
