SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Behind senior captain Claire Linney, the No. 20 Santa Clara women's water polo team defeated conference rival Cal State Monterey Bay, 13-6. The Broncos are now 2-0 this season versus the Otters. Linney led SCU, 10-10 overall, 6-1 WWPA, with two goals, two steals and two kick outs drawn.
After the first half, the score was tied at three-all. The Broncos built up momentum in the second half and went on a 10-3 scoring run to solidify the win. Redshirt sophomore Rochelle Stowe was an integral part of Santa Clara's 10th win of the season. At 2-meter defender, she stopped the Otter's offense attack and was also able to get the ball to the back of the net twice for two goals.
Freshman Marina Allen had a strong performance with a goal and drew SCU's lone 5-meter penalty. Amy Lamb, Jenny Knutson, Kristin Olson and Meg Zimmerman each tallied a goal, and freshman Laura Espinosa and sophomore Taylor Harkins scored twice. Sarah Safir had a steal and Allie Lamb tallied two assists, a steal and a kick out.
Sophomore goalie Wren White posted another strong performance in the cage. She tallied seven blocks and a steal in the contest.
"We did not come out as hard in the first half, but successfully came back and were able to get the win," said head coach Keith Wilbur. "In the second half we focused on the counter attack, but we need to make sure we come out a play four strong quarters."
The Broncos conclude their three-day home stand with Maryland on Sunday, March 15. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
