SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- The Santa Clara women's water polo team was ranked No. 20 nationally in the Collegiate Water Polo Association's varsity top-20 preseason poll. Under the tutelage of seventh season head coach Keith Wilbur, the Broncos return 15 letterwinners, including All-WWPA senior Amy Lamb, and welcomes five newcomers.
"It is nice to be recognized in the top-20 before the start of the season," said Wilbur. "It is based on what we did last year and the farther we get into the season, the more meaningful the rankings become. We have a couple of big tournaments with a lot of ranked teams participating in the first few weeks of the season, so we will have a much better idea of where we stand after those games."
SCU opens up the 2009 campaign on Saturday, January 24, at California State East Bay. Game time is set for noon. Five days later, on Thursday, January 29, the Broncos will host their first game in the new Sullivan Aquatic Center versus local rival No. 2 Stanford at 6 p.m.
