Santa Clara, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's water polo team faced its past this afternoon in the annual Alumni Game and came away with a 15-15 tie at the Leavey Center Pool. Among the returning letterwinners who participated in the match today included Emily Abbott ('03), Darci Cassinelli ('00), Anne Ginotti ('04), Elizabeth Glotzbach ('03), Becky Hong ('03), Kristy Kunisaki ('00), Elizabeth Schuricht ('01), Carrie Wei Pohlemus ('00), and Lara Williams (`00). Because there were not enough teams to field two complete squads, the current team helped out their predecessors. Head coach Keith Wilbur had the freshman play with the alumni in the first quarter, the sophomores in the second quarter, the juniors in the third quarter, and the seniors in the fourth quarter. Hong led all alumni scorers with four, while Abbott, Glotzbach, and Williams all found the back of the net once. The rest of the goals were scored by members of the 2006 squad.
"It was a fun afternoon. A lot of alumni came out and it gave the current team a chance to bond wit hthe players that really built up the Santa Clara women's water polo program," said Wilbur of the afternoon. Following the game, a barbeque lunch was held for the alumni, current players, and their families.
Santa Clara returns to action on March 3, when it travels to Cal State East Bay for Western Water Polo Association match. Game time is set for 3 p.m. The last time these two teams met up, the Broncos came away with a dominating 15-1 victory.
