SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Catherine Flynn scored four goals and drew two crucial fouls that resulted in Banana Slug kickouts to lead the Santa Clara University women's water polo team to an 8-2 victory over UC Santa Cruz Sunday at the Leavey Pool.

With the win, the Broncos improved to 13-10 on the season and have been victorious in each of their last two outings. Santa Clara returns to the pool Saturday against Loyola Marymount at the Davis Tournament.

"Today was a good win for us against UC Santa Cruz," said SCU coach Keith Wilbur. "The referees let the game flow and it was a fairly physical outing for both teams. Santa Cruz played hard and gave us a really good game. We had to work hard for every goal."

Bryn Asher and Andrea Evans scored two goals each for the Broncos. Emily Bonk and Kathleen Hamm recorded three steals apiece, while Lindsey Bacolini's two assists was the team leader in that category. Kristin Barnes stayed between the pipes for the entire game and registered eight blocks and two steals.

Flynn, a senior from Sacramento, Calif., scored SCU's only first quarter goal as the game started out tied at one goal apiece after the first 8:12. She added a second goal to give the Broncos a 2-1 advantage they would never relinquish with 5:48 remaining in the second period.

Evans, a sohpomore from Saratoga, Calif., added a second period goal to give Santa Clara a 3-1 lead going into halftime.

Flynn added two scores in the third period, while Asher and Evans registered a goal apiece as SCU extended its lead to 7-1 heading into the fourth stanza. Asher gave the Broncos their only fourth quarter score and Santa Cruz freshman Anna Hardy added the final goal of the game with 5:03 left on the clock.
