Water Polo Earns 20th Win of Season

April 24, 2004

LOS ANGELES - The Santa Clara University women's water polo team won their second match of the day, besting Chapman 13-7 at the 2004 Western Water Polo Association Championship, hosted by Loyola Marymount's Burn Recreation and Aquatic Center. The Broncos, now 20-16 on the season, advance to the fifth-place game of the tournament. Earlier in the day, SCU defeated Sonoma State 7-4.

Santa Clara took a 3-2 lead after the first quarter, and then a 6-4 lead by halftime, thanks in part to five different players scoring. SCU broke the game open with a four-goal third period.

"It was a close first half but then in the second I think we played the best water polo of the weekend," head coach Keith Wilbur said. "We really started to click as a team and built out our lead."

Catherine Flynn and Katy Shumm notched four goals each to lead Santa Clara. Five other players tallied one goal each. Alanna Simpkins and Flynn also posted three assists apiece.

Anne Ginotti guarded the cage and registered five blocks and five steals. She was pulled from the pool late in the contest due to a shoulder injury. Kristin Barnes finished the match, collecting four saves.

Allison Stone and Marci Myer had two goals each for Chapman.

The Broncos team will next face CS San Bernardino match tomorrow morning at 11:30 a.m. Fans can follow WWWPA play online by Clicking Here.

This season marks the program's fourth at the Division I level. Santa Clara placed fifth in 2001 and '03 and the program's highest finish ever came in 2002, when the Broncos earned an upset victory to place fourth.
