Water Polo Falls in Tourney Opener

April 23, 2004

LOS ANGELES - The Santa Clara University women's water polo team opened the 2004 Western Water Polo Association Championship this afternoon with a loss to rival Cal State Bakersfield. The fourth-seeded Roadrunners got off to a fast start and topped the No. 5-seeded Broncos by a 12-8 score, marking the first match of the tournament not decided by one goal.

Tied 2-2 after the first period, CS Bakersfield used three goals in both the second and third periods to pull away from the Broncos. Jamie Bakers scored four goals to lead the Roadrunners, while Bronco Catherine Flynn netted four for the Broncos in the loss.

Santa Clara trailed 8-3 after three periods, and put up a valiant comeback, with five fourth-period goals, three of which came from Flynn.

Head coach Keith Wilbur said the team only converted three of 13 6-on-5 opportunities, while CSB was 3 of 5. "That was the game right there. I think we played better than the score indicated, but we just didn't convert when we had the man advantage."

Kathleen Hamm, Katy Shumm, Katie Radvanyi and Amanda Ginn scored the other goals for Santa Clara. Radvanyi added two assists and six kick outs. Alanna Simpkins added three steals and three kick outs, while Anne Ginotti guarded the cage and registered five blocks and five steals.

The Broncos fall to 18-16 on the season and will next face seventh-seed Sonoma State at 10 a.m. Matches are played at host Loyola Marymount's Burn Recreation and Aquatic Center.

Tournament action continues through Sunday, and the winner will receive an automatic bid to the 2004 NCAA Championships, hosted by Stanford University, May 8-9 at the Avery Aquatic Center. Fans can follow WWWPA play online by Clicking Here.

This season marks the program's fourth at the Division I level. Santa Clara placed fifth in 2001 and `03 and the program's highest finish ever came in 2002, when the Broncos earned an upset victory to place fourth.
