POMONA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's water polo team earned a 7-6 overtime victory over Division III top-ranked Pomona-Pitzer this evening at Haldeman Pool. It marked the Broncos' first overtime win in two seasons, and the team's overall record evens to 14-14.
"Our team really stepped it up today," SCU head coach Keith Wilbur said. "A win like this really builds the character of a team. Everybody stepped up to earn today's win."
Catherine Flynn, Kathleen Hamm and Katie Radvanyi scored two goals each, and Danielle Mansfield added one score. Radvanyi added two assists to her totals, while Katy Shumm netted three steals and three field blocks in an outstanding defensive performance. She was matched by goalkeeper Anne Ginotti's nine saves and three steals.
Tied at 5-5 at the end of regulation, the Broncos scored two quick goals and held strong on defense to secure the win.
The Broncos return to the Bay Area and will next play at home on Thursday, April 1. SCU hosts Brown for a 10 a.m. contest at the Leavey Pool. Admission is free. The Broncos will visit Sonoma State for a 1 p.m. contest that Saturday, and return home to host UC Santa Cruz on Sunday, April 4, also at 1 p.m.
