DAVIS, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's water polo team split its round-robin matches at the 24th annual Davis Shootout, hosted by UC Davis at its newly-opened Schaal Aquatics Center. The Broncos fell to 16th-ranked Arizona State 10-2, and closed the day with a 10-8 victory over Pacific to move their record to 7-6 on the season.
Kathleen Hamm led the Broncos with an all-around performance against the Tigers, scoring two goals, drawing two four-meter kick outs, and shutting her opponent down to secure the Bronco victory.
"We were protecting a two-goal lead at the end of the game and Kathleen did a great job defending hole," head coach Keith Wilbur said.
Alanna Simpkins led all Broncos with three goals, while Catherine Flynn netted two. Bryn Asher, Katie Radvanyi and Katy Shumm added one goal apiece, with Shumm adding five assists to her totals. Anne Ginotti guarded the cage and recorded seven blocks in the contest.
Against the Sun Devils, Flynn scored in the first quarter, making it a 3-1 contest. Down 4-1 at the half, ASU put the game out of reach with three third-period scores. Hamm added a tally in the fourth quarter for the Broncos. Ginotti registered four saves in goal.
"I thought we came out flat," Wilbur reflected. "ASU's a good team, but we should have played better than we did."
The Broncos remain at the Davis Shootout and as the second seed from their bracket, will play two contests on Sunday: at 8:15 a.m. against CS Northridge and at noon against UC Davis.
