SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's water polo team won two matches today, defeating Division III ninth-ranked CS Hayward for the second time in as many games, and Division III fourth-ranked UC Santa Cruz. The games were played at the Slugs' East Fieldhouse. The Broncos remain undefeated at 3-0.
"Our strength in the first game was the defense we played all four quarters," SCU head coach Keith Wilbur said. "It was our first time in a large pool and we responded well, with good team speed and a strong counterattack."
Amanda Ginn and Bryn Asher added two goals apiece, while one score each was notched by Alanna Simpkins, Kathleen Hamm, Danielle Mansfield and Erin Scollin. Kristin Barnes made her collegiate debut in goal, and recorded six blocks and one steal.
Wilber added that Katy Shumm had a standout game in defense, drawing five offensive fouls and nabbing three steals. Radvanyi also drew four kickouts to aid the Broncos.
Against UC Santa Cruz, Flynn again led the Broncos, notching four goals and three assists. Radvanyi, Asher, Hamm and Ashley Marino posted two scores each. Simpkins added one
"Ashley had a break out game for a freshman," Wilbur said. "She scored some key goals and also had three assists. Katy Shumm also had a strong game for us, posting four steals and Katie Radvanyi added three assists as well."
Anne Ginotti led SCU in the cage against the Slugs, grabbing 11 saves and four steals.
The Broncos will return to action next weekend, participating in the Stanford Tournament. Santa Clara opens against seventh-ranked California on Saturday at 11 a.m. and will follow with a 7 p.m. match against No. 8 Hawaii. On Sunday, the Broncos are schedule to battle top-ranked UCLA at 10 a.m.
