Women's Water Polo Falls to LMU 17-6

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Loyola Marymount water polo players Julia Wald and Lucy Windes scored three goals each to lead the ninth-ranked Lions to a 17-6 victory over Santa Clara this evening at the Leavey Pool. Senior Bronco Kim Yost posted one goal in each quarter to lead Santa Clara in the loss as the Broncos fall to a 7-17 overall mark. LMU improves to 15-4.
The Lions' Meredith Bellotti converted a penalty shot with one second left in the first quarter to give the visitors a 6-2 lead. Bronco junior Sarah Schmitt opened up scoring for the home squad with her point at the 5-minute mark of the first quarter. Yost added the first of her four goals with just over 1:30 left in the period.
LMU was held to just four goals in the second quarter as Yost and sophomore Becky Hong tallied goals for the Broncos.
Yost added her final point of the evening at the 6:20 mark in the fourth quarter, scoring on the far side, out past the seven-meter marker. LMU created the final margin on a power play goal with 16 seconds remaining in the match, scored by Rebecca Peterson. Peterson added an impressive goal less than two minutes earlier when she side-armed a pass behind her back into the net.
Also scoring for the Lions were two each by Jaime Kroeze, Belloti and Teresa Guidi, and one each by Danielle Worrill, Kira Shymanski and Orla Stewart.
The Broncos return to action tomorrow morning as part of the Pioneer Tournament. Santa Clara opens play against CS San Bernadino at 8 a.m. followed by Chico State at 10:30. Both matches will be held at Leavey Pool.
