SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Sophomore Kelley Mays registered four goals as the Santa Clara women's water polo team defeated Chico State 12-4 this morning at the Leavey Pool. She added two goals in the second game of the doubleheader, a 14-7 SCU win. The Broncos are now 7-15 on the season.
Sophomore Elizabeth Glotzbach began the offense for the Broncos with a goal just three minutes into the first game. Mays, senior Kim Yost and sophomore Becky Hong added one goal apiece to close the quarter with a 4-0 lead.
Santa Clara registered four more goals in the second period, with two more by Mays and one each by sophomore Carly Carpenter and junior Sarah Schmitt.
Schmitt added another goal at the top of the third quarter for the Broncos. The shutout ended when Chico State's Carson Roberts scored one for the visitors with 1:32 remaining in the period.
The Wildcats' Amy Cessna led the visitors with three goals, all scored in the final quarter, including her final one with just nine seconds left on the clock. Freshman Kelly Morrison, Hong and Mays scored for the Broncos to make the final margin.
The second game was a closer contest, with the Broncos taking a 6-2 halftime lead. Heading into the final period up 9-6, the Broncos added five goals and allowed only one to secure the win.
Leading the Broncos in the second game were Yost and Hong, with three goals each. Mays and Schmitt also had multiple-scoring games with two goals each, while Morrison, senior Liz Schuricht and freshman Anne Ginotti added one goal apiece.
Sarah stretch posted four goals to lead Chico State in the second game.
The Broncos remain at home for a 10 a.m. match against Hawaii tomorrow.
