SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - Two-meter woman Becky Hong recorded three of Santa Clara's four goals in a 4-3 victory over Davis Collegiate in the second game of the Slugfest Tournament this afternoon at the East Field House Pool in Santa Cruz.
Earlier in the day, the Broncos topped UC Santa Cruz's blue team 14-1, behind three goals by sophomore Elizabeth Glotzbach. The wins mark the Broncos' first of the season as the team improves to 2-3 overall.
"The girls played like their hair was on fire," head coach Steve Hanson said of his team's second win of the day. "Defense was the key to the last game as we struggled to post points on the board. We had three balls that hit the post and just sat on the goal line, but never crossed. We could have blown the game wide open if those would've gone in. But we played some physical defense and shut them out in the last quarter."
In fact, the Broncos shut out Davis in all but the second quarter. Senior Kim Yost added the Santa Clara's final score, while sophomore Emily Abbott started in goal and finished with two blocks.
In the first game, against the Banana Slugs, Santa Clara also received two goals each from freshman Kelly Morrison, Hong and senior Liz Schuricht. Yost, sophomore Kelley Mays, Abbott, sophomore Carly Carpenter and freshman Anne Ginotti each posted one goal in the rout. Schuricht led the defensive effort in goal with five blocks.
The Broncos remain at the Slugfest tournament and will play Cal Poly tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. A win would send the Broncos to an 11 a.m. match, while a loss would have Santa Clara closing out the tournament in a 1 p.m. contest.
