Serving Aces With Volleyball's Nina Sevastopoulos

Oct. 17, 2008

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - After having a tremendous impact in the Broncos 4-1 start to the West Coast Conference action, junior Nina Sevastopoulos checked in with SantaClaraBroncos.com to talk about the upset of then-No.15 Pepperdine, her transition to the right-side, Hercules and much more.

The No. 18 Broncos (12-4, 4-1 WCC) host the Dons of San Francisco this Saturday at the Leavey Center. First serve in this WCC match is scheduled for 1 p.m.

SantaClaraBroncos.com: How is the season going thus far?
Nina Sevastopoulos: So far we are doing really well. We're working hard in practice and improving on our game. We have a good chemistry this year. We get along really well and I think that helps the coaches a lot.

SCB: Tell us about the match against then-No. 15 Pepperdine.
NS: I never thought we would lose. Even the first two sets that we lost, we played really well. We just couldn't pull it out. In the third set, we really started to catch onto their habits and we were able to apply a lot of pressure. The comeback was awesome. Everyone had butterflies.

SCB: Who on the team is surprising you this year?
NS: I wouldn't say it's a surprise because she is a very talented athlete, but I would say Lindsy. She set for us her freshman year, but then moved to being a hitter. She just works so hard and practices her setting. She makes a great effort to make sure we have good sets in the match. She has a great attitude and is always supportive.

SCB: What's do you like to do when you're not on the court?
NS: I like to nap. A LOT! I also enjoy hanging out with my friends and watching movies. I also get together twice a week with my family for dinner.

SCB: What's your favorite movie?
NS: I like comedies and a lot of Will Farrell movies. I also like Love Actually and Hercules. It's on my iPod and I watch it on every road trip. The soundtrack is great. Disney movies are great. We have a couple of Disney songs on our warm-up CD.

SCB: Do you have any pregame rituals?
NS: I listen to techno really loud. Everyone can hear it through my headphones. But I like to go through the scouting report in my head and focus on what my job is. I smile a lot, too. We give each other a lot of high-fives and cheer each other on during warm-up to get the energy flowing.

SCB: What's your favorite food?
NS: Sushi.

SCB: What's your favorite TV show?
NS: Family Guy and Seinfeld.

SCB: Why did you choose Santa Clara?
NS: I really felt comfortable when I came on campus and met the coaches and my teammates. The coaches here really look out for the best interest of their athletes. The campus is absolutely gorgeous and I wanted to stay close to home.

SCB: If you weren't playing volleyball, what sport would you be playing?
NS: Tennis. I love tennis. I play with my mom and used to go to camps as a child.

SCB: Where is your favorite place to travel?
NS: Mykonos, Greece and Hanover, Germany.

SCB: Finish this sentence: I will never...
NS: Doubt myself. I've been at the lowest of lows in physical shape and mentality. But I've gotten out of it and I know that I can do anything I want to do.
