No. 23 Bronco Volleyball Tops SJSU, 3-1

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Led by Krista Kelley's match-high 18 kills, the No. 23 Santa Clara volleyball team defeated San Jose State, 3-1, Tuesday night in a cross-town rivalry match at Spartan Gym. The final set scores were22-24, 25-13, 25-20, 25-22.

The Broncos (13-5) were also led by Brittany Lowe's double-double of 15 kills and 11 digs, and Anna Cmaylo's 11 kills and match-high six total blocks. Lowe also dished out a match-high three service aces.

The Spartans earned an early 9-4 lead on a 5-0 run that started with a kill by Nia Freeman and ended with a kill from Emily Burke. However, the Broncos rallied back to knot the score 12-12 on a block assist by Lindsy Davigeadono and Cmaylo. Yet, SJSU quickly regained control and created a four-point gap, 17-13, on a service ace by Kristal Tsukano. Santa Clara then produced a 5-1 run to tie the score, 18-18, on a kill by Nina Sevastopoulos, but San Jose State did not give up and won the set, 25-22, on a kill by Kelly Crow.

The Broncos exploded in the second set as they jumped to a 4-1 lead on kills from Lowe and SJSU errors. Although the Spartans interrupted the Broncos run, SCU held the advantage and continued to pull ahead. Santa Clara produced a 9-1 run in the middle of the set that was ignited by a kill from Cmaylo and ended with the Broncos claiming a 20-9 edge. Santa Clara took the set, 25-13, on a service error by SJSU.

Santa Clara started off strong in the third set. After the score was tied 4-4, SCU climbed to an 11-5 lead on points from Cmaylo, Davigeadono, Lowe, Kelley and Tanya Schmidt. The Spartans did fight to put together a 6-2 run to come within two points of the Broncos with a block by Kylie Miraldi and Burke, 19-17. After a called timeout by Santa Clara, Kelley posted four of the Broncos five points to reach set-point, 24-20. A block assist by Cmaylo and Lowe sealed the triumph, 25-20.

 

 

The Broncos once again took early control of the scoreboard in the fourth and decisive set. Santa Clara posted an eight-point lead on a kill by Lowe, 20-12. But SJSU started to chip away at SCU's edge. The Spartans made it a five-point set as Miraldi won the battle at the new with Cmaylo to make the score, 21-16. Yet, the Broncos reached match-point a kill by Kelley and a service error by the Spartans gave SCU the win, 25-22.

The Broncos return to West Coast Conference action on Friday, Oct. 24 against the Gaels of Saint Mary's. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. at McKeon Pavilion in Moraga.
