Volleyball Falls in Heartbreaker At No. 23 BYU

Thinking they'd scored set point in the fourth stanza, the Broncos were whistled for an illegal substitution and No. 23 BYU went on to keep its record perfect at home, winning 3-1.  Set scores were 25-18, 22-25, 10-25 and 26-28.  Santa Clara is 7-8 and 2-4 in the WCC and BYU moves ahead 13-3 and 6-0 in league play.

Bronco head coach Jon Wallace said the team was committed to coming to BYU and putting up a fight.  "We have to bring this same fight to San Diego on Saturday," said Wallace.  "We have to get better for Saturday."

SCU hit .132 with 54 kills (32 e, 167 att.).  They collected 51 assists, six service aces, five service errors, 64 digs and 10 team blocks.  BYU hit .216 with 52 kills (20 e, 148 att.).  They collected 47 assists, seven aces, seven service errors, 62 digs and 18 team blocks.

The Broncos had four players with double digit kills.  Sabrina Clayton led all hitters with 15 kills, collected eight digs.  Megan Anders had 14 kills and five block assists.  Nikki Hess and Haley Cameron both scored 10 kills each with Hess adding 19 digs and three aces.  Alyssa Anderson had 48 assists and eight digs.  Mary Shepherd had 18 digs and two aces.

Wallace was pleased with the seniors and excited about the play of the four freshmen they started in Hess, Shepherd, Clayton and Maddie Cannon.  "Taylor Milton couldn't play due to injury and our freshmen played really big. It was a big moment for us - I think we grew up a lot tonight," said Wallace. 

The Cougars were led by four players with double-digit kills.  Alexa Gray had 13 kills, Kathryn Lecheminant had 10 as did Tambre Haddock and Whitney Young. Camry Godfrey collected 40 assists and Ciara Parker had 18 digs.  Young collected one block solo and 11 block assists.

Tied 1-1 in the first set, BYU ran out to a 4-1 lead.  The Broncos battled back to tie it up 4-4 and then went up 6-5 on a kill by Hess and then 8-6 on kills by Cameron and Clayton.  After a kill by Godfrey, Gray scored a kill and an attack error.  An error by Cannon tied it up 9-9.  Two kills by Hess and another by Anders put SCU up 12-9.  Three kills by Hess sandwiched between a hitting error put SCU up 16-11.  After a kill by Young, Hess scored her fourth kill in five attempts, 17-12 Broncos.  After a BYU sideout, Clayton scored a sideout.  Trading points Clayton scored again, 20-14 SCU.  Back-to-back aces by Clayton and Anders made it 21-14.  Gray stopped the rally with a kill.  A kill by Anders gave SCU the ball, 22-25 SCU.  The Cougars skilled on a kill by Gray and a Bronco hitting error.  Anders stopped the mini run with a kill, 23-17.  A team block by Anders and Cameron gave SCU set point and a kill by Cameron clinched the set 25-18.

BYU started out with a 3-1 lead, but SCU scored five of the next six to take a 6-4 lead including a kill by Cameron.  SCU went up 7-4 on an error by Jardine.  Back-to-back aces by Hess made it 10-6. Timeout BYU.  BYU scored twice but Clayton stopped the run with a kill off the block, 11-8 SCU.  Clayton answered with a tip, 12-9 SCU.  Gray smacked it way out and Clayton's two kills made it 15-9 SCU.  SCU went ahead 17-11 on errors by Gray and a kill by Anders.  Two errors by Gray and a kill by Cannon made it 19-11 SCU.  Timeout BYU.  BYU went on to score seven of the next eight to pull within two, down 20-18.  Cameron's kill stopped the rally but BYU scored three more to pull within a point on an 8-1 run.  BYU went up 23-21 and after a long rally, BYU collected set point, 24-22 BYU.  A kill by Le Cheminant the set, 25-22.

Set three was just about all BYU after the teams were tied three times in the early going.  BYU then went on a 7-0 run to take a 10-3 lead before a Cameron kill halted the rally.  BYU scored nine of the next 11 to go up 19-5.  An ace by Katy Schatzman stopped the Cougars momentarily, but BYU finished off the set by winning 25-10.

The teams tied it up three times in the fourth set.  Three straight BYU team blocks and then a block solo made it 8-4 Cougars.  Timeout Broncos.  After the Cougars scored an ace, Anders stopped the rally with a kill followed by one by Cameron, 9-6 BYU.  Shepherd served it into the net for a BYU sideout.  The Broncos pulled within one on a kill by Hess, one by Clayton and an error by Haddock, 11-10 BYU.  Haddock scored a kill and the Cougars collected a team block to make it 13-10 BYU.  The teams kept battling, tying it up at 15 and 16.  SCU pulled within one at 18-17 BYU on a kill by Hess.  Cameron's kill made it 19-18 BYU, but Young's kill gave BYU a sideout.  The teams tied it up at 19 and 20 with a kill by Hess giving SCU its 20th point of the set. An ace by Hess gave SCU the lead, 21-20.  Timeout BYU.  An error by Clayton tied it up 21-21.  Haddock scored her 10th kill. Timeout Broncos.  After a long rally, Cameron's attempt went long.  Clayton scored a kill to pull SCU within one, 23-22.  Haddock hit it out the back and BYU called for time – tied 23-23.  LeCheminant scored on a kill for the sideout and match point, but Clayton's 14th kill tied it up 24-24.  Gray's kill put BYU up a point, but Clayton answered through the double-block to tie it up 25-25.  Young scored a kill on the Bronco overpass, 26-25 BYU.  Anders ball smacked down in the back row for a kill.  A kill by Hess gave SCU set point, 27-26, but SCU was called for a rotation error after much conversation with the officials and it made the score 27-26 BYU.  BYU called for time.  BYU won a team block, 28-26.
