Volleyball Cruises in Four over USF

The Santa Clara volleyball team defeated rival San Francisco 3-1 on Friday night as the Broncos hosted DIG PINK! to raise money and awareness for Breast Cancer.  Game scores were 25-11, 25-22, 25-27 and 25-17.  Santa Clara is 12-9 and 3-4 in the WCC.  USF is 3-17 and 1-6 in the WCC.

"Kaleigh Durket, Tanya Schmidt and Dana Knudsen played wonderful matches. Both Dana and Tanya are in a grove right now," said Bronco head coach Jon Wallace. "Our outsides are a little banged up and it showed. We get two days rest with a weekend off and they will come back strong next week.  Alexandra Palmer came in and gave us some great plays defensively which gave us momentum in set two to help us win and she played well in our come-back in set three."

"It was great to see the whole crowd in pink, especially the Ruff Riders," continued Wallace. "I know we were able to raise a good bit of money tonight and we'll know the tally in the next week or so and look forward to presenting it.  It's a good time for our break this weekend, with only one match this week, and then we can come back next weekend strong as we head into the second half of the season."

Santa Clara hit .239 with 58 kills (20 e, 159 att.).  Santa Clara collected 68 digs, 52 assists, eight service aces and 10 team blocks.  USF hit .113 with 43 kills (26 e, 150 att.).  USF collected 64 digs, 41 assists, five service aces and six team blocks.

Santa Clara was led by a trio of Broncos with double-digit kills.  Dana Knudsen led all hitters with 16 kills, hitting .538. Kaleigh Durket had 13 kills and Tanya Schmidt added 11, hitting 478 with two block solos. Playing with the 6-2 offense, Emily Burke had 26 assists and eight digs and Alexandra Palmer had 19 with 10 digs.  Bridget O'Hara had 20 digs and Kayla Lommori scooped up 10 digs with eight kills and three aces.  USF's Sarah Mandela had 13 kills, hitting .321 and Joan Caloiaro had 20 digs with 31 assists.

In the first set Santa Clara ran out to a 3-0 lead on kills by Schmidt, Knudsen and Lommori.  After trading points, including a Knudsen kill, Burke's ace and a team block by Lommori and Knudsen gave the Broncos a 6-1 advantage.  Trading points twice, SCU took a 9-3 lead on a Knudsen kill.  A Schmidt block solo made it 11-3.  After a Durket error USF called timeout with the Broncos up 13-4.  Megan Anders' kill, a team block by Anders and Knudsen and another Knudsen kill made it 18-7.  After Burke's second ace of the set, the Dons called timeout, down 19-7.  Durket collected kills on the next two of three points, 24-10 SCU.  A Schmidt kill gave SCU a 25-11 set one win.  SCU hit .382 with 14 kills (1 e, 34 att.).  USF hit .025 with 9 kills (7 e, 39 att.).  Knudsen had five kills and Durket had four.

Set two featured four ties to begin.  The Dons took a 7-4 lead on two kills and a Knudsen error.  With the Dons up 11-6, SCU called timeout.  A team block by Schmidt and Anders and a Williamson ace made it 11-9 USF.  A kill by Knudsen and another by Lommori tied it up 12-12.  An Anders kill to the back row and then Lommori gave the Broncos a 14-12 lead.  Timeout Dons.  Trading points, SCU took a 16-13 lead after a Dons error.  Durket's kill off the block made it 18-14 Broncos.  After a Schmidt kill, making it 20-15 Broncos, the Dons whistled for time.  Two Dons points and SCU whistled time.  The Dons scored six of the next seven points to tie it up 21-21.  Schmidt's tip gave SCU a 22-21 lead, but the Dons tied it up on a kill off the block.  A Caiti Wenger serving error gave the Broncos the ball and then a Lommori kill made it 24-22 Broncos.  An Anders kill to the back row gave the Broncos set two, 25-22.  Santa Clara hit .212 with 13 kills (6 e, 33 att.).  USF hit .235 with 13 kills (5 e, 34 att.).  Schmidt had four kills. 

SCU took a 3-0 lead in set three.  The Dons came back to tie it 3-3.  Two straight USF errors made it 5-3 Broncos and then 8-4 Broncos on two more USF hitting errors.  Two straight Lommori aces pushed the lead to 10-4 Broncos.  A Knudsen kill to the middle made it 11-4 SCU and then 12-6.  The Dons scored five straight when SCU called timeout.  SCU scored two and then the Dons scored once to make it 14-13 Broncos.  Kills by Lommori and Schmidt made it 17-14 Broncos.  USF tied it 18-18 on a kill by Sarah Mandala.  After the Dons scored three of the next four points, SCU whistled for time, down 21-19.  Mandela's kill off the block pushed the Dons lead to 22-19.  SCU scored two before the Dons whistled for time.  Another Mandela kill and a Williamson hitting error made it 24-21 Dons.  Two Durket kills and USF whistled for its second timeout, up 24-23.  The two traded points twice with SCU tying it up 25-25 on a Dons hitting error.  Two straight kills by Alycia Cox down the line gave the Dons set three 27-25.  SCU hit .137 with 15 kills (8 e, 51 att.).  USF hit .143 with 13 kills (7 e, 42 att.).   

In set four two tied it up twice. The Dons scored three of the next four points when a Knudsen kill off the block made it 5-4 Dons.  A team block by Schmidt and Durket tied it 6-6.  Durket's kill off the block and a team block by Williamson and Schmidt made it 8-6 Broncos.  After a net error on the Dons, USF whistled for time, down 9-6.  Schmidt's kill off the block made it 13-9 Broncos.  Knudsen's kill in the back row and then one by Durket made it 16-13 SCU.  A Williamson kill down the line and a Dons attack error; and SCU led 19-13 when the Dons called timeout.  USF scored two of the next three points before Schmidt's kill to the back row made it 21-15.   Trading points twice, SCU advanced the score 24-16.  Lommori's kill cross-court gave the Broncos set four and the match, 25-17.  SCU hit .268 with 16 kills (5 e, 41 att.).  USF hit .029 with eight kills (7 e, 35 att.).
