Santa Clara Volleyball Falls in 5 vs. Gonzaga

Santa Clara, up 2-0 on Saturday afternoon couldn't stop a surging Gonzaga volleyball team and fell 3-2 at the Leavey Center. Set scores in Gonzaga's win were 17-25, 12-25, 25-19, 25-21 and 15-12. It is the first time Santa Clara has lost to Gonzaga in 15 years.
Santa Clara is 11-9 and 1-4 in the WCC and Gonzaga moves to 7-11 and 3-2 in the WCC.
Santa Clara hit .255 with nine team blocks and eight service errors. Gonzaga hit .253 with 12 team blocks and six service aces. Individually Santa Clara had three hitters in double figure kills: Lindsy Davigeadono had 14 kills, hitting .300, Dana Knudsen had 11 kills, hitting .474 and Kayla Lommori led all hitters with 17 kills, hitting .149. Bridget O'Hara had 20 digs and Samantha Selsky, starting as the setter for an injured Emily Burke, added 15 digs with 49 assists and five service aces.
Santa Clara opened the first set with an ace from Selsky. Gonzaga jumped out to a 6-3 lead, but a block solo by Katherine Douglas quieted the Bulldog rally momentarily before GU went up 8-4. Santa Clara scored four straight points off a GU service error and two straight kills by Knudsen and a GU setting error to tie it up 8-8. The two teams knotted it up at 9 and 10, the latter on a kill by Lommori. The Broncos took a 12-10 lead on two straight Selsky aces. SCU went up 13-11 on a kill off the block by Lommori and then took a 14-11 lead on a Douglas kill when GU called timeout. GU called timeout when SCU went up 18-13 on kills by Davigeadono, Douglas and Lommori. SCU went up 21-16 on another kill off the block by Knudsen, a crushing kill to the back row by Lommori and a tip to the back row by Douglas. Lommori smashed the ball through the defenders to the back row for a kill and Tanya Schmidt spiked one down to the floor to make it 24-17 SCU. SCU scored on a team block by Schmidt and Douglas to take set one, 25-17. SCU hit .538 and Gonzaga hit .320. Knudsen and Lommori both collected four kills and Bridget O'Hara collected four digs with Selsky adding three aces.
In set two, Santa Clara ran out to a 5-0 lead on two Lommori aces and a team block by Schmidt and Davigeadono when Gonzaga called timeout. The Broncos added to their lead, going up 7-1, on a Knudsen kill to the Gonzaga donut. SCU continued to score, taking a 10-3 lead on another Lommori kill. SCU took a 12-4 lead on a kill by Douglas. Santa Clara took a 20-9 lead and won set two 25-12 on a kill by Selsky. SCU hit .370 in set two and Gonzaga hit .115. Lommori had five kills in set two.
In set three, the two teams knotted it up twice before Gonzaga jumped out to a 5-2 lead. Gonzaga took a 13-7 lead when SCU scored two straight points, including another ace by Selsky. Gonzaga went up 17-10 when Santa Clara called timeout. Gonzaga took a 23-15 lead and then SCU scrapped to scored three straight, making it 23-18 Gonzaga. Gonzaga won set three 25-19. SCU hit .278 to Gonzaga's .353.
In set four the two teams tied it up twice before GU went up 5-3 and then 6-4. Gonzaga hit the ball into the net and then a block solo by Selsky and the match was knotted up at 6-6 and then 7-7. Three straight Bronco errors and GU went up 10-7, but a kill by Schmidt in the middle made it 10-8 GU. GU went up 12-8 when SCU called timeout. The Broncos pulled within one on a ball handling error by the Bulldogs and three kills by Krista Kelley when GU called timeout, up 15-14. Coming out of the time-out, quickly Gonzaga scored two aces and crushed a kill, taking a 18-14 lead, when SCU called timeout. Another GU error and a block solo by Selsky and SCU was down by two. GU went up 21-16 off four straight kills. GU went up 22-17 on a kill after Lommori knocked down a kill for SCU. The two teams traded points and GU won set four with a kill off the block, taking set four 25-21. SCU hit .057 and GU hit .265.
In set five the Bulldogs raced out to take a 4-2 lead. Davigeadono scored two straight kills to tie it up 4-4. Knudsen just crushed the ball to the back row to make it 6-4 Broncos. Gonzaga went up, 8-7 on two straight Bronco ball-handling errors. SCU tied it 8-8 on a kill by Knudsen, but GU took the lead back on a kill off the Bronco team block. After a Bulldog service error, tied at 9-9, the two teams rallied for one of the longest points of the day before Santa Clara was called for a ball handling error. With Gonzaga up 10-9, Santa Clara called timeout, and came out to score the first point out of the timeout, taking an 11-9 Bulldog lead when Davigeadono slammed one to the backcourt. After a Bronco service error, trailing 12-10, Santa Clara scored on a Bronco error. Gonzaga took a 13-11 lead on a kill and then Douglas knocked a kill off the block to make it 13-12 lead. Gonzaga tapped one over the net to take a 14-12 lead and a Bronco hitting error gave the Bulldogs the game and the match, 15-12. SCU hit .080 in set five and GU hit .185.
