Already ranked No. 20 in the Volleyball magazine preseason poll, Santa Clara checked in at No. 25 in the AVCA preseason coaches poll today. Santa Clara, which reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season and has the WCC's top recruiting class in 2009, finished last season ranked at No. 25 in the AVCA's final poll.
Penn State, winners of the last two NCAA titles, is ranked No. 1 in the preseason. The Nittany Lions have won their last 64 consecutive matches dating back to Sept. 15, 2007, an NCAA Division I record.
"We are a young team so to be in the AVCA's preseason top 25 is a strong testament to our past play both in the WCC and nationally," said Bronco head coach Jon Wallace, looking for the school's 11th straight NCAA Tournament bid.
"This week we are working to find out rhythm as an offensive team and also continuing to develop our defensive intensity," continued Wallace. "We spent a couple days on a retreat where we went camping and white-water rafting. It was wonderful. We really came together as a team and now it's time to play volleyball together. I like our effort and look for us to continue to improve each day before be leave for Hawaii on Aug. 27."
Santa Clara opens the season on No. 9 UCLA on Fri., Aug. 28 at 8 pm (Pacific time) in Honolulu before playing at No. 7 Hawaii at 10 pm on Sat., Aug. 29.
Santa Clara opens at home on Thurs., Sept. 10 vs. Arizona at 7 pm before playing No. 19 Utah on Sat., Sept. 12 at 7 pm.
