MALIBU, Calif. - The No. 24 Santa Clara volleyball team rallied to a 3-0 victory over No. 19 Pepperdine in a West Coast Conference match at Firestone Fieldhouse on Thursday. The final set scores were 25-23, 25-18, 25-22. The Broncos completed the regular-season sweep of the Waves as they posted a 3-2 edge back on Oct. 4.
The Broncos were led by senior outside hitter Brittany Lowe who tallied 14 kills and 15 digs. Junior setter Lindsy Davigeadono dished out 31 assists, three aces and seven blocks, while redshirt senior Anna Cmaylo also posted seven blocks and three aces. Senior libero Taylor O'Brien collected 18 digs as well.
Pepperdine opened with a 4-1 lead in the first set and held onto the advantage until Santa Clara was able to knot the score at 15-15 on a service ace from Libby Morrison. The Broncos then claimed a 21-19 lead, their first of the set, on back-to-back aces by Davigeadono. Yet, the score was tied again at 23-23. However, Cmaylo pounded out two straight kills to end the set, 25-23.
Santa Clara stormed into the second set with a 5-0 lead fueled on points from Lowe, Davigeadono and Cmaylo. The Broncos continued to rally and created an eight-point game, 13-5, on an ace from Davigeadono. A 7-2 run brought the Waves within three, 15-12, but that's as close as they would get as the Broncos soared to a 25-18 win.
The beginning of the third set was close. Cmaylo gave Santa Clara a 4-2 lead but Pepperdine responded and tied the score, 4-4, on a kill by Lilla Frederick. An ace from Cmaylo and a block by Tanya Schmidt and Davigeadono gave SCU a 7-4 advantage and the Broncos never looked back.
The Broncos return to action on Saturday, Nov. 1 against the Lions of Loyola Marymount. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Gersten Pavilion in Los Angeles.
