Final Stats

STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 8 Santa Clara University volleyball team got things headed back in the right direction Saturday as they completed a sweep of their doubleheader with a 3-0 (30-22, 30-16, 30-21) sweep of the Georgetown Hoyas to close things out at the Stanford Invitational at Maples Pavilion.

With the win, the Broncos (9-2) bring to an end their season-opening 11-match road trip. The team will finally return to the Leavey Center Tuesday night for its 2006 home opener, taking on the Sacramento State Hornets at 7 p.m.

Following the tournament, Santa Clara's Anna Cmaylo and Crystal Matich were named to the All-Tournament team for their performances.

Cmaylo led the Broncos in the evening with 13 kills while hitting .476. Megan Pura turned in her second solid effort of the day, putting down eight kills and making six blocks to pace the defense. Crystal Matich dished out 41 assists and Taylor O'Brien, filling in at libero, made 12 digs and served up a pair of aces.

In addition to O'Brien, many of the younger Broncos saw a good amount of time on the court Saturday night. Lindsy Evans had two kills and a block, Nina Sevastopoulos made five kills and four digs, Lauryn Dowd put down four kills to go with four digs, and Brittany Awai served up an ace.

"I think it was kind of a dysfunctional match, both teams were pretty sloppy, but I thought we settled down a little bit and our new players brought some energy and played a little better out there," head coach Jon Wallace said about the new Broncos who saw extended time in the match. "Those girls have been working so hard in practice and it was good to see them get onto the court."

The first game of SCU's second match of the day was a give-and-go kind of affair marked by inconsistent play by both sides. Neither team could get into a solid rhythm as they combined for 16 attack errors in the first frame. Despite the lack of fluidity, the Broncos did manage to pull ahead by four at 20-16 thanks to a service error by Georgetown (5-7). A shared block by Pura and Evans helped cap a 3-0 SCU run that made it 22-16. The lead eventually was extended to 29-22, and again, another attack error made the difference as it gave the Broncos the first game at 30-22.

Santa Clara got things together in the second stanza, jumping out to a quick 6-3 lead behind a pair of Cmaylo kills. The run continued as the Broncos got out to a double-digit lead at 19-7 behind a kill by Sevastopoulos and an ace by Brittany Lowe. The teams continued to trade sideouts the rest of the way, as the Broncos held a 28-16 advantage before kills by Pura and Sevastopolous put things away heading into the break.

The third stanza began as another give-and-take battle, with the teams matching one another up to the 7-7 point, before kills by Cmaylo and Lowe gave SCU a two-point lead. But the Hoyas continued to fight, retaking the lead at 12-11 after a 5-2 run before a Lowe kill evened things up once more.

Georgetown attack errors gave the Broncos a 19-15 lead soon after, forcing the Hoyas to burn a timeout. After play resumed, SCU showed no signs of rust as a Sevastopoloulos kill made it 22-17. The lead stayed at five at 25-20 when the Hoyas took another timeout, but consecutive kills by Pura upped the lead to six, and two more Georgetown attack errors made it match-point for the Broncos at 29-21. Lowe's kill from the outside ended things as the Broncos had their ninth victory of the year in hand.
