Three Santa Clara Players Named to Academic All-District Teams
Nov. 10, 2005
Santa Clara, Calif. - The No. 10 Santa Clara women's volleyball team is having one of the their most successful seasons in school history, boasting a 22-1 record and recently captured the West Coast Conference Championship. While the Broncos are excelling on the court, many members of the squad are also shining in the classroom, as Kim McGiven, Anna Cmaylo and Cassie Perret were recently named to ESPN The Magazine's Academic All-District VIII volleyball teams. McGiven was named to the First Team, while both Cmaylo and Perret were third team selections.
McGiven has been an offensive force for the Broncos this season, leading the team in kills (4.25) and points (4.72) per game. A co-captain along with senior Kristen Luxton, McGiven has recorded 20 or more kills on six occasions this year, including a 34-kill effort against UC Irvine on September 3. Her performance against the Anteaters not only broke the school record for the most kills in a four-game match, but also enabled her to capture the WCC Player of the Week (9/5). In addition to her offensive skills at the net, the 6-1 outside hitter is averaging 2.03 digs and 0.47 blocks per game. A Finance major in the Business College at Santa Clara, the Encinitas, Calif. native carries an impressive 3.888 g.p.a.
Cmaylo has emerged as one of Santa Clara's top offensive threats in 2005, averaging 3.21 kills on a .387 hitting percentage. The 6-4 middle blocker is also a great defender, leading the team in total blocks (94) and blocks per game (1.32). The sophomore established career highs in kills (20) and attack attempts (35) earlier this year against Utah (9/17), while recording a personal-best 12 blocks against San Diego (10/15). An undeclared major in the Arts & Sciences College, the Napa, Calif. native sports a 3.442 g.p.a.
Perret is one of the most efficient hitters in the country, putting the ball down at an impressive .411 clip. The 6-1 opposite is on pace to break teammate Annalisa Muratore's single-season mark of .384, set only a year ago. Perret is one of Santa Clara's most consistent players, averaging 3.50 kills, 2.13 digs, and .85 blocks per game. Earlier this season, the Menlo Park, Calif. native was tabbed as the Sports Imports/AVCA National Player of the Week (9/12), the first such national honor in Bronco history. She guided her team to the Bronco Invitational title by producing stellar numbers against top-notch competition, including victories over No. 6 Arizona and then-No. 18 UC Santa Barbara. The senior averaged 4.70 points, 4.10 kills, 2.10 digs, and 1.20 blocks per game while hitting at a stellar .415 clip over that weekend. In addition, Perret has earned two WCC Player of the Week honors (9/12 and 10/17). A Communication major in the Arts & Sciences College, Perret holds down a 3.209 g.p.a.
"I'm really proud of Kim, Anna, and Cassie. On the court, they have been excellent and it's great to see they are being rewarded for their hard work in the classroom as well. All three are very deserving of this honor," said head coach Jon Wallace.
West Coast Conference action continues for Santa Clara Friday night when No. 22 San Diego hosts the 7 p.m. face off at the Jenny Craig Pavilion. With the WCC crown all wrapped up and three league matches remaining, the Broncos will attempt to finish the conference season undefeated before postseason play begins.
