San Bruno, Calif. - Cassie Perret has done it again. After leading No. 14 Santa Clara to an important West Coast Conference victory over then-No. 15 San Diego last Saturday, the 6-1 opposite hitter was named the West Coast Conference Co-Player of the Week, along with Pepperdine's Sophia Milo. This is Perret's second weekly league honor and Santa Clara's fourth overall this season, with Kim McGiven and Brittany Lowe being the other recipients.
In a heavyweight battle between the WCC's top two teams Saturday afternoon, senior Perret was instrumental in SCU's 3-1 triumph over USD at the Leavey Center. She collected a team-high 15 kills on an impressive .483 clip in the 27-30, 30-8, 30-16, and 31-29 triumph. In addition to being one of the Bronco's most effective offensive players out on the court, the Menlo Park, Calif. native displayed some great defensive moves, picking up seven digs and six blocks (one solo, five assisted). The 2004 All-WCC First Team selection also chipped in two aces on the afternoon to put an exclamation mark on a great all-around performance.
"Cassie has worked hard for three years and she is having a great senior year," said head coach Jon Wallace. "She's putting everything together as far as doing the big stuff, as well as the little stuff. It's great that she is being recognized by the conference as the WCC Player of the Week again."
Santa Clara is currently having one of its best seasons in school history, sporting an overall record of 16-1 and 5-0 in the WCC. The win over the Toreros was the Broncos ninth-straight victory and in that span of matches, they have only lost three games. SCU will be back in action this Friday and Saturday when they travel to Bay Area rivals San Francisco and Saint Mary's in an attempt stay undefeated in league play. Both matches are slated for a 7 p.m. start time.
