SANTA CLARA, Calif. - If there were any thoughts of a let-down from the No. 25 Santa Clara University women's volleyball team after their return to the national rankings, those were dispelled early on in the Broncos' 3-0 (30-13, 30-24, 30-16) rout of Fresno State in their first match of the Bronco Invitational at the Leavey Center on Thursday night.
Behind four quick kills by reigning WCC Player of the Week Kim McGiven, the Broncos (4-0) jumped out to a 7-0 lead over the shell-shocked Bulldogs (2-3). Santa Clara coasted the rest of the way in that first game, as senior Kristen Luxton's service, including consecutive aces, carried the Broncos to the final five points of Game one.
Fresno State looked to recover the lost momentum in the second game, trimming a six-point deficit to three late. But a Cassie Perret kill followed by the Bulldogs misplaying Perret's serve on the ensuing point gave the Broncos a 25-20 cushion that propelled them to a 2-0 lead.
The third game resembled the first in nearly all aspects: Santa Clara jumping out to a big lead early on then just piling on and never giving Fresno State a chance to settle in. The Bronco lead got all the way to 17-5 in a four-point sequence in which Brittany Lowe accounted for two aces.
Perret led all Broncos with 13 kills while also hitting .393 for the match. Setter Crystal Matich continued her consistent play with 35 assists and a pair of aces. Annalisa Muratore made her first appearance on the court for the Broncos since being sidelined late last season with knee injuries and hit .667 with eight kills and four blocks in limited action.
The Broncos return to action tomorrow afternoon at 4:30 p.m. to take on No. 15 Arizona in the first of two Bronco Invitational matches. The Wildcats swept No. 18 UC Santa Barbara in the early match today. UC Santa Barbara and Fresno State square off following the Broncos-Wildcats at 7 p.m.
